October’s Birthstones: Opal & Tourmaline

Opal-Pendant

October’s birthstone the Opal has been called “the queen of gems” because it embodies the colors of all the other gems. Opal is one of the few gemstones that are sedimentary in origin. Silica deposits at the bottom of shallow inland seas 30 million years ago became the opals we treasure today. Each opal retains a link to its watery origins as these stones are made up of 6-10% water. Opals are said to enhance self- worth, confidence and self-esteem. Opals are said to help one understand their full potential and it brings lightness and spontaneity as it encourages radiation of positive emotions.

Opals are the traditional gift to celebrate the 14th wedding anniversary.

Tourmaline is also considered to be October’s birthstone and comes in almost every color of the rainbow.

This gemstone is known for displaying several colors in the same gemstone. These bi-color or tri-color gems are formed in many combinations; gemstones with clear color distinctions are highly prized. One multicolor variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colors bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices having a pink center, white ring, and green edge. Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA.

Tourmaline is the traditional anniversary gift to celebrate the 8th wedding anniversary.
